New episode #TeamUnischuleTUD: "I like working in a school that sees itself as a school for everyone."
Dresden University School is a school for everyone. The concept formulates the following educational guideline: "The school is based on a broad understanding of inclusion."
On the school website universitaetsschule.org/team, Heide Kühne explains how she supports the school community and #TeamUnischuleTUD in this important task as a learning guide in the middle school (years 4-6) and special needs teacher.
Maxi Heß, Head of the University Community School, is often asked: "How many students with special needs are there at Dresden University School? How heterogeneous and challenging are the learning groups? Can learning with a high level of personal responsibility work with an average student body?"
How many i-kids are there at the university school?
Her answer to this question, which is primarily focused on numbers, may come as a surprise: "We have around 860 so-called "inclusion children" in the current school year. This is because every child and young person has their own pace and personal interests, individual strengths and weaknesses, which the learning guides take into account in their work. Our starting point is maximum heterogeneity. We do not even entertain the illusion of a homogeneous student body. You have to bear in mind that the statistics only include children and young people with diagnosed support needs. According to my observations, not all pupils who need special support have this status. That's why we don't want to make this distinction. But of course there are children who are supported by a school assistant - an enrichment for the team at the university school."
Average school community in Dresden
The school trial aims to show that learning success is possible regardless of social background. To this end, the student body should reflect the social average in terms of gender, need for support, multilingualism and parents' highest educational and professional qualifications. It is possible to select the children who best fit into the case group because there are usually more applications than free places. The University Community School also does not have a fixed school district. Details on demographics and how they are collected are provided by the ForUS University School Research Center at TU Dresden in the " scientific publications.
