Current Degree Programs
At the Institute of Media and Communication, approximately 400 students are currently enrolled in one of the degree programs offered:
Bachelor’s Level

Major in Media Research as part of the combined Bachelor’s program in Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences (GKS) at the Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Social Science (since winter semester 2023/24)
- Bachelor’s Program Media Research (phasing out)
- Minor in Media Research (BA SLK) or supplementary area Communication Studies (phasing out) as part of another degree program
Master’s Level
- Master’s program Applied Media Research (since 2007)
The Major in Media Research within the Bachelor’s program in Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences (GKS) replaces the former Bachelor’s program Media Research since winter semester 2023/24. The major provides foundational knowledge in communication studies and allows students to specialize in selected research areas. In addition to training in social science research methods and statistical data analysis, the degree program also includes a practical professional component. Students can choose between various combinations of first and second majors. We recommend the following combination: Media Research as the first major and Social Sciences as the second major.
Important: Students currently enrolled in the Bachelor’s program Media Research may continue their studies as scheduled. Please note any changes to the program structure.
As an empirical social science, communication studies focuses on the systematic investigation of the conditions, structures, processes, content, and consequences of public communication, particularly communication mediated by mass media. The Master’s degree program Applied Media Research focuses on the empirical methods used to study media and public communication. Drawing primarily on theories from the social sciences, psychology, and statistics, the degree program imparts knowledge of key findings from both academic and commercial research. The degree program is supplemented by an interdisciplinary specialization track.
