Money and Power in the Roman Republic

Rome’s transformation from a regional force in Latium into a Mediterranean superpower was accompanied by an accelerated change of economic realities. The persistent influx of vast natural and monetary resources from abroad deeply altered the basis of Rome’s military. As income skyrocketed, the exercise of political influence at Rome became increasingly intertwined with issues of personal finance.

Foreign "clientelae" in the Roman Empire

Since the publication of Ernst Badian's groundbreaking study "Foreign Clientelae" in 1958, his emphasis on the personal relations between Roman senators and members of the provincial elites has become the dominant interpretation for studies of the Roman Empire.The volume thus offers a fresh approach for analysing "Foreign Clientelae" while at the same time assessing its significance more appropriately.

Während die Bereitschaft der antiken Eliten, Belange der Gemeinschaft zu finanzieren, bisher vornehmlich im Hinblick auf Griechenland untersucht wurde, stellt dieser Band die römische Antike in den Mittelpunkt. Die Autoren nehmen dabei sowohl die Diskurse in der Stadt Rom als auch die Praxis in den Provinzen in den Blick.

War die römische Republik ein Staat? Dieser Frage gehen zehn renommierte Autoren in ihren Beiträgen nach, in denen sie mögliche Träger von Staatlichkeit beleuchten, Kommunikationsstrukturen nachvollziehen und die Erfüllung spezifischer Staatsaufgaben untersuchen.

Introducing the Chair of Ancient History

Since 1992, the Chair of Ancient History has been making a lasting contribution to teacher education, as well as to the advanced courses pertaining to the study of Ancient History and the interdisciplinary degree program in Classical Studies in Dresden. The first holder of the Chair was Martin Jehne until 2021; he was succeeded by Christoph Lundgreen in 2022.

Classically, Ancient History covers the history of the Greeks and Romans in the Mediterranean region in the two millennia from the 16th century BC to around 600 AD. In addition to the traditional focus in Dresden on the Roman Republic, the focus is on Archaic and Classical Greece and the period from the Principate of Augustus to the Antonine Age. Our team's methodological focus is on the history of political culture, legal and constitutional history, social and gender history, art and the reception of antiquity. This broad research orientation is reflected in a correspondingly diverse range of courses. Research and teaching benefit from interdisciplinary collaboration with colleagues - from Classical Studies, but also from other epochs and other Institutes at the TUD as well as selected cooperation partners, such as the Dresden Coin Cabinet and the SKD's Antiquity Collections.
