Department of Modern and Contemporary History
Focusing on German, European and transatlantic perspectives, the "long" 20th century is at the center of the research and teaching of the Chair of Modern and Contemporary History.
The department will investigate social transformation processes based on societal changes in the 19th century, which was marked by industrialization, technological innovation, and the development of mass societies, especially in the field of mass communication and mass consumption as well as by political and social emancipation movements.
The focus of the research and teaching is on social, cultural, gender, emotional, and historical perspectives. It focuses on social interactions that take place in particular within certain economic and political structures.
Research priorities of the professorship will focus on issues of protest and violence, genocide, democratization and peace and will explore the era of the world wars and the long 20th century.
