"Dangerous border" - a panel discussion on democracy, migration and media - 10.7.2024 from 6 pm

Violence at Europe's (external) borders has never been as visible as it is today: numerous, often disturbing images of events at borders are circulated in the media. They often play a central role in the controversial public debate on flight and asylum and are used by both supporters and opponents of migration for their respective arguments.

Art and visual studies scholar Tanja-Bianca Schmidt will talk to investigative journalist Nicole Vögele and political scientist Volker Heins about the political situation along the European (external) border and the role of image reporting.

The political scientist Volker Heins completed his habilitation at the University of Giessen in 2001. He is currently responsible for an international research project at the Centre for
Interdisciplinary Research (ZiF) at Bielefeld University, where he investigates the political and normative consequences of the European border regime. Until 2022, Volker Heins was Professor of Political Science at the University of Duisburg-Essen, specialising in political theory, democracy and migration. His book Open Borders for All. Eine notwendige Utopie was nominated for the NDR Non-Fiction Prize in 2021. His current book Hinter Mauern. Geschlossene Grenzen als Gefahr für die offene Gesellschaft (together with Frank Wolff) pursues the thesis that the increased isolation of Europe from the outside also threatens democracy and freedom within Europe.

Nicole Vögele (*1983) is an investigative journalist and teaches as a professor of moving film at the HfBK Dresden. She is a member of the international research network Lighthouse Reports, which was honoured with the Human Rights Film Award in 2022 for its work on illegal pushbacks at the Bosnian-Croatian border. Vögele graduated from the Institute for Journalism and Communication (MUZ) in 2006 and studied documentary film directing at the Baden-Württemberg Film Academy from 2010 to 2017. Her award-winning essay films have been shown at renowned festivals such as the Berlinale.

The event takes place as part of the exhibition "Dangerous Border", which was curated by Tanja-Bianca Schmidt and can be seen from 6.6.2024 - 11.8.2024 at Kunstverein Dresden.
