Conference “Mobilizing Affect – Affective Mobilization”

The Collaborative Research Center “Affective Societies” at FU Berlin is organizing its annual conference in cooperation with our research project “Image Protests on Social Media” at TU Dresden and ICI Berlin Institute for Cultural Inquiry. It takes place from May 21st - 23rd 2025 at ICI (Christinenstr. 18-19, Haus 8, D-10119 Berlin).

Exhibition "Dangerous Border" at Kunstverein Dresden e.V.

On June 6th, 2024, Kunstverein Dresden the exhibition "Dangerous Border" opened. With Davor Konjikušić, Tamara Kametani and the research agency Border Forensics, the exhibition juxtaposed three artistic positions dealing with images from Europe's border zones. Their work opens up a new perspective on migration: Who is allowed or able to cross borders? How are borders constituted? And what functions do the images have?
Tanja-Bianca Schmidt, a member of the DFG research project "Image Protests on Social Media", curated the exhibition, which was on view June 6th until August 11th, 2024.

We are proud that the exhibition was selected by the Federal Agency for Civic Education as one of 57 projects that were honored in the “Active for Democracy and Tolerance” competition. Read more about it here.

Lectures Series "Image Protests / Bildproteste"

In the winter semester 22/23, we offered the lecture series "Image Protests / Bildproteste". With lecturers from all over the world, students at TU Dresden were able to learn from actors in science, but also in the visual arts, to establish links to historical and current events. Workshop: Images in Social Media Research

Methods in dealing with large image corpora, including their creation, but also the evaluation of metadata and results, the handling of sensitive content - these are all necessary and difficult tasks. Therefore we offered a one-day methods workshop on February 10th, 2023, in which these and more topics in dealing with image corpora and their analysis were presented and discussed. More than a dozen speakers were able to pass on their knowledge to the participants.

Cooperation with our Fellow Tomasz Kitlinski

Panel discussion: No TikTok, no revolution? Political Protest in Transition

On June 13th, 2023, our colleague Tanja-Bianca Schmidt took part in the panel discussion "No TikTok, no revolution? Political protest in transition".
Since political protest is an important form of expression of individual participation in our democracy, the forms of protest are subject to constant change, which has also and especially through digital media has developed decisively and is constantly taking on new forms, while the content nevertheless remains the same.
