Content of the course
In his polemic "How German is German art?" (1999), Werner Hofmann rejected the national as the essence and aesthetic category of German painting. In fact, art in the German-speaking countries has been in a formative international exchange from the very beginning. Conversely, German artists have long been considered part of the international art scene. Is the idea of a meaningful national identity therefore not misleading, even a dangerous phantasm?
