London
Ranked the best student city in the world, London is considered a cultural, artistic and economic powerhouse, a city where amazing food from around the world is never far away and where historic streets are waiting to be explored. Unlike other British universities (including the University of Exeter), London does not have a cohesive university campus, but rather numerous institutes scattered throughout the city. One of them is the Queen Mary Institute of Intellectual Property Research, where our students attend lectures in intellectual property law together with the London LL.M. students. In any case, our students are in good hands here not only in terms of cosmopolitanism, culture and cuisine, but also in terms of their intellectual property education.
Semester schedule
The study period at QMUL begins for our LL.M. students in the second half of September and ends in January. At the beginning of the program, students receive an overview of the modules, the library, and guidance on academic writing in introductory sessions. The 10 "Teaching Weeks" are interrupted after five weeks by a "Study Week", during which mostly tutorials and intensive courses are offered. Exams take place in January.
Following their studies in London, our students complete a subject-related internship of at least 4 weeks worldwide at a location of their choice.
Courses
At probably the most distinguished institute in the field of intellectual property law in England, the "Queen Mary Institute of Intellectual Property Research", our students are trained together with the students participating in the Institute's LL.M. program, thus attending only postgraduate courses and learning and studying together with future British intellectual property specialists. Students attend courses totaling 45 credits from a range of approximately 12 courses in all IP areas. This includes a compulsory basic course on British Intellectual Property Law. Furthermore, we expect students to participate in the course "Critical Thinking and Writing in Law classes" or similar, in order to find their way around the British academic environment as best as possible.
In addition, students can choose another course, for example an international and comparative law course on trademark and patent law or copyright law; IT law also plays an important role in London. Of course, there is the possibility to attend further lectures as a "guest student".
Exams
In the courses chosen, students must take an examination at the end of the semester, which usually consists of a final exam or an essay.
QMUL certificate
In addition to your studies within the LL.M. program, students from 2022/23 have the possibility to acquire a certificate of the QMUL. This is an offer of QMUL, i.e. this certificate is not part of the LL.M. program. Prerequisite for such a certificate is the achievement of 60 local credits at QMUL. However, the 45 credits that you complete as part of the LL.M. program at TU Dresden can be credited for this purpose. If you are interested in this, please contact the contact persons at QMUL directly. Please note that the tuition fees will increase in this case from £ 5,240 to £ 7,000.
