Strasbourg
The city on the French-German border is probably known to most people for its old town and its cathedral, but also for its tarte flambée and Alsatian Riesling. Legal scholars, however, think above all of the Université Robert Schuman, which trains highly specialized patent and trademark lawyers at its Centre d'Etudes Internationales de la Propriété Industrielle (CEIPI). It is the only institute of its kind in France where students, whether scientists or lawyers, can receive specialized training in the field of intellectual property. Over time, therefore, a close network has developed between the Institute and its former graduates, which is why the lectures and exercises are almost invariably given by practitioners. Among them are French, European and Japanese patent attorneys as well as high-ranking employees of WIPO in Geneva and the European Patent Office in Munich as well as the Vice President of the Office for Harmonization in Alicante.
In addition, participants will gain differentiated insights into the various professional fields of activity and will be able to establish uncomplicated contacts with the lecturers.
Semester schedule:
The study period in Strasbourg begins as early as the end of September and lasts until January. Subsequently, students complete a minimum four-week subject-related internship in Strasbourg.
Courses:
The focus of the studies in Strasbourg is on French as well as European patent, trademark and utility model law. The French-language training takes place together with the prospective patent attorneys, so it is not only aimed at lawyers, but also at natural scientists.
In addition to the classical lectures, there are many practical exercises (travaux dirigés), for example on how to formulate patent claims, how to conduct trademark oppositions or how to draft license agreements.
Examinations:
At the end of the stay in Strasbourg, students usually take two exams.
Tuition Fees: There are no tuition fees in Strasbourg, an ERASMUS scholarship for European students is possible.
