Article on Deutschlandfunk for the 75th anniversary of the UN Children's Fund UNICEF
On the occasion of the 75th anniversary of the UN Children's Fund, Deutschlandfunk published an article to which Prof. Anna Holzscheiter also contributed. The article "76 76 years of Unicef / There are no enemy children" (only available in german), which was published on 10 December 2021, sheds light on the origins as well as the changes of the organisation. What was originally founded as an emergency fund for the starving and sick children in destroyed Europe after the Second World War has developed over time into the largest children's aid organisation in the world. In the meantime, the mandate of the organisation goes far beyond humanitarian aid for small children. With the adoption of the Convention on the Rights of the Child, the understanding of childhood has changed completely. Today, young people and their participation rights are just as much a part of the organisation's remit as the fight against child mortality and diarrhoeal diseases. But UNICEF has also become an important political voice for children's rights. Today, more than 15,000 employees of the children's relief organisation in over 143 countries make sure of this. However, even after 75 years, there is still much to be done. The Corona pandemic in particular has turned out to be the biggest crisis for UNICEF since its foundation.
