Workshop “Radical Provocations: Scum, Feminism, and Reading Publics!” with Breanne Fahs
Under the lead of the research project team from The Arts of Autonomy at the LMU Munich (https://www.artsautonomy.net/) the manifesto project co-organized a virtual workshop with Breanne Fahs, professor of women and gender studies at the Arizona State University (https://search.asu.edu/profile/977917). Breanne Fahs held a lecture on the reactions and ripple effects caused by Valerie Solanas’s SCUM Manifesto, especially how this polarizing text influenced liberal and radical factions in the US feminist movement and the broader public differently. The Q&A session provided room for more insights into the contradictory figure of Solanas, of whom Fahs is the biographer (Valerie Solanas, Feminist Press, 2014). In addition to Burn it Down! Feminist Manifestos for the Revolution (Verso, 2020), an anthology of radical feminist manifestos that is of fundamental relevance to our manifesto project, Breanne Fahs has published extensively, including Women, Sex, and Madness: Notes from the Edge (Routledge, 2019), an interdisciplinary volume combining clinical as well as qualitative psychological studies with a gender/cultural studies approach, and Out for Blood (SUNY Press, 2016), a collection of essays on menstrual justice.
