This interdisciplinary and international conference was dedicated to analysing representations and constructions of European masculinities of the 20th and 21st century. Based on a comparative and primarily literary perspective, the conference pursued commonalities and differences which can be observed in (self-)descriptions, images, transformations and practices of European masculinities during the past 100 years. The conference sought to offer a critical survey of theoretical and historical approaches that have dominated the field of masculinity studies throughout various scientific disciplines. At the same time, however, new perspectives with regard to comparative masculinity studies in Europe were developed in order to trigger further research initiatives.
