Poverty: Gender Perspectives of Coping with Poverty in Past and Present
This conference was held from 28th – 29th November 2013 at the ceremonial hall in the rectorate of TU Dresden (Mommsenstr. 11) and dealt with the interrelationships of poverty and the gender dimension.
Gender Studies have described gender as an efficient construction in many areas of society, which detrimentally affects the development of personalities through stereotyping or, for women, means disadvantages regarding the access to goods and ressources. It is thus important to consider gender constructions with regard to the causes of poverty, the mechanisms of its production, the conception and provisions of poverty as well as with regard to coping strategies of poverty. A critical analysis of the interrelationships of poverty and gender should not continue to foster gender difference in solely comparing poverty of men and women, but has to question the multidimensional effect of gender constructions in determining poverty.
