Foundation
The Language and Multilingualism Lab (LMLab) was founded in autumn 2024 with the appointment of Anja Binanzer as Professor of the Chair of German as a Second and Foreign Language (DaZ/DaF).
Spatial and technical equipment
By taking over the former SoundLab premises, the LMLab, with its soundproof construction, has optimal acoustic framework conditions for linguistic experiments. In addition, the rooms can be completely darkened to create constant lighting conditions for experiments.
The newly acquired EyeLink Portable Duo eye-tracking device enables eye movement measurements to be taken in both reading studies and visual world experiments.
Detailed information on the spatial and technical equipment of the LMLab can be found here.
Aims and central questions
The research work of the LMLab aims in particular to contribute to research into the following questions:
- How do (multilingual) speakers process language?
- How do (multilingual) speakers acquire language?
- How can the language processing and language acquisition of (multilingual) speakers be modeled?
Measuring eye movements (eye tracking) is a promising method for making people's language processing processes, which are invisible to the naked eye, "visible" in order to better understand the underlying cognitive processes.
Initial data collection is planned for the summer semester 2025.
Research methods
Our work focuses in particular on the following experimental methods:
- eye tracking (reading studies, visual world paradigm)
- reaction time measurements (e.g. self-paced reading, priming)
