Supplementary area Master Linguistics, Literature and Cultural Studies
The following overview is intended for students of the Master's degree programme in Linguistics, Literature and Cultural Studies with enrolment from the winter semester 2013/14 onwards.
Table of contents
Structure
The supplementary area (Ergänzungsbereich) consists of two selectable sub-areas: the foreign languages sub-area (Fremdsprachen) on the one hand and the specialist training sub-area (Fachausbildung) on the other.
The possible modules according to the module descriptions of the supplementary area can be taken more than once if the contents of the courses differ. Die Module des Teilbereichs Fremdsprachen sind fakultativ. The possible modules according to the module descriptions of the supplementary area can be taken more than once if the contents of the courses differ. The modules of the foreign languages sub-area are optional. If you decide for the foreign languages sub-area, you may choose a maximum of three modules (corresponding to 15 credits = Leistungspunkte/LP).
This area offers six modules that are labeled Foreign Languages. These are basically structured in the same way (4 SWS language training seminars, module examination: short presentation and language exam, 5 credit points). They differ only in the language level that can be achieved. This is based on the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) and comprises the levels: A1, A2, B1, B2, C1.1 and C1.2. If you already have basic language experience, you may, for example, continue with a foreign language from level B2. If you want to learn an unknown language, module A1 is recommended.
You can take the language training seminars at the Faculty of Linguistics, Literature and Cultural Studies or at TUDIAS. Please note that you have to take two exams (a language exam and a short presentation) to complete the foreign language module. If the examiner does not offer the short presentation, please contact them directly and refer to the study documents. The short presentation may be structured differently depending on the course (e.g. a short oral presentation, a group activity, etc). Please note that in the foreign languages sub-area a maximum of three modules (= max. 15 credits) may be selected.
The modules of the Foreign Languages area may be credited more than once if the selected languages are different. Thus, if you have first chosen the module Foreign Languages A1 and have taken Italian A1, you can have the basics of Polish also credited in the module Foreign Languages A1 in a further semester. You only have to consider that none of the selected languages may be the same as the language you are studying. In the above example, your sub-disciplines must not be Romance Studies (focus Italian) and/or Slavic Studies (language practice - Polish).
Note: If you have already successfully completed all the necessary exams in a language training seminar (= 2 SWS), then you have to attend another language training seminar (= 2 SWS) according to the module description, but you do not have to take any further exams to complete the module. Please make sure that both of the language training seminars have different contents (phonetics, morphology, etc.), but are the same language.
Please note: Language training seminars in German cannot be credited due to legislation, as this is the language of study.
The sub-area specialist training is divided into the module Specialist Training - Free Module and the module Specialist Training - Extended Free Module.
Please note that the specialist training sub-area must be completed to the extent of at least 15 credits. You may also compose the entire supplementary area from the sub-area specialist training.
Both modules of the specialist training sub-area offer the possibility to select individual courses from the handbook of the supplementary area, which is published every semester on the homepage of the Faculty SLK. These are courses offered by the Faculty of Linguistics, Literature and Cultural Studies, by the Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Social Science, and by further faculties and institutions of TU Dresden.
In principle, you do not have to take both modules of the specialist training. You may also choose only the Specialist Training - Extended Free Module. The module Specialist Training - Free Module is not a prerequisite for this. The difference is in the credit points that are awarded after successful completion of the module examination. In the module Specialist Training - Free Module, you can acquire 10 credits if you have completed at least 4 SWS and thus at least two graded examined assessments amounting to 10 credits. The module Specialist Training - Extended Free Module offers the possibility to acquire 15 credits if you have completed at least 6 SWS and thus at least three graded examined assessments. You may also take the modules more than once if the contents of the courses differ.
Courses
Each semester, selected courses are published on the homepage of the Faculty. For a quick search, please look under News. In the handbook of the supplementary area you will find courses from the institutes of the Faculty of Linguistics, Literature and Cultural Studies, the Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Social Science, and further faculties and institutions of TU Dresden.
In principle, you may use all the courses offered by the Faculty of Linguistics, Literature and Cultural Studies for your supplementary area. If you are interested in a course that is not listed in the handbook, please contact the responsible lecturer. Discuss with them whether you can take the course and whether a suitable examined assessment is offered. We would also recommend a short consultation with your Academic Advisor.
Offers of the Career Service
You are free to use all the offers of the Career Service. You will find them on the website of the Career Service.
Please note: The workshops of the Career Service are neither graded nor credited.
In order to have a workshop credited, please use the modules of the specialist training sub-area (Free Module and/or Extended Free Module) of the supplementary area. Please note that the other courses that are entered in the corresponding modules must be graded. Since the entire supplementary area is graded, it is not permitted to leave one of the modules ungraded. However, it is possible to leave examined assessments ungraded within a module and have them recognised as additional qualifications. This means that if you decide to take part in a Career Service workshop, you will need at least two additional graded examined assessments in the Free Module in order to complete the module. The same applies to the Extended Free Module. In this module you have to take at least three more graded examined assessments.
Registration for an examined assessment (Prüfungsleistung)
Registration for the examinations in the supplementary area cannot be done online. Instead, for each examination you have to fill in the Form supplementary area and submit it to the examiner before the examined assessment is taken. The examiner will then forward this form containing the corresponding grade report to the Joint Examination Office of the Faculty of Linguistics, Literature and Cultural Studies and the Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Social Science.
