Registration and Withdrawal from Modules and Exams

General Information
Since the 2025/26 winter semester, the IHI Zittau has been using selma, the portal for students, prospective students, and faculty at TU Dresden. This makes it possible for both faculty and students to access and manage not only exams but also courses online.
“selma” stands for “self-management” and serves as the portal for numerous degree programs at TU Dresden, where students can register for modules/courses and exams, view their results, and submit applications related to their studies.
Registration / Withdrawal / Cancellation:
Module Registration
- You must register for all modules (required and elective modules, as well as focus areas - if applicable to your degree program) on your own.
- You can only register for or drop modules if you are enrolled in the degree program (re-enrolled or on leave of absence) and the relevant deadline is still open (see Dates and Deadlines).
- It may happen that only a limited number of spots are available in required-elective modules. In selma, the spots made available by the module coordinators are listed and visible. If the number of students wishing to enroll in a module exceeds the number of available spots, spots are allocated via selma through a random selection process.
- If you wish to return a spot you received through the random selection process, this is generally only possible within a period of 2 weeks after the spots were assigned. In this case, you must notify the Examination Office via email. Please note that if you wish to take the module in the next available semester, you are not guaranteed a spot. You must re-register for it.
- Please note: Your registration for a module is a prerequisite for registering for the exam in that module.
Exam Registration
- Exam registration does not occur automatically. You must complete it yourself within the registration period (October 1, 2026 – November 16, 2026) via the student portal (selma). Registration is required for every desired exam as well as for any prerequisite exams. This also applies to retake exams.
- Please note: Registration periods are mandatory official deadlines. If the registration period has already expired, late registration cannot be accepted unless there are reasons beyond your control. Reasons that arose during the registration period (such as SELMA not working), but for which registration would have been possible through other means during that period, will not be accepted!
- Be sure to save your electronic registration; it serves as proof of your exam registration, and you should bring it with you to the exam if necessary. Any problems with the electronic registration must be reported immediately to the Examination Office.
De-registration from Exams
- You may de-register from the exams you have registered for up to 3 business days before the respective exam date without providing a reason. After that, your registration for the exam is binding.
Business days are all days except Sundays and holidays. The exam day does not count toward the calculation of the de-registration deadline; that is, there must be exactly 3 business days between the end of the de-registration period and the exam day.
Withdrawal from Exams
- Once the withdrawal deadline of 3 business days before each exam has passed, you may only withdraw from the exams. To do so, you must notify the Examination Office of your intended withdrawal immediately—that is, without undue delay—and provide credible evidence of a valid reason for which you are not personally responsible. The most common reason is withdrawal due to illness.
- If you must withdraw from an exam due to illness, a medical certificate (not a certificate of incapacity for work) is required along with your withdrawal notice and must be submitted immediately to the Examination Office in its original form. You can find the template for the medical certificate under “Withdrawal.”
- The Examination Board for the respective degree program decides whether to approve the withdrawal.
- PLEASE NOTE: To take the exam at a later date, you must re-register for the exam.
