In an interview with MDR, Prof. Martin Wolter discusses flexible and digital distribution grids as the key to the energy transition

The energy transition is one of the greatest challenges of our time. The expansion of renewable energy sources such as wind and solar power is moving forward, but integrating these energy sources into the existing power grid requires innovative solutions. Prof. Martin Wolter, who holds the Chair of Networked Energy Systems in the Faculty of Electrical and Computer Engineering, focuses his research on precisely these challenges and was interviewed about them by Mitteldeutscher Rundfunk. A key focus is the development of flexible and digital distribution grids. These are intended to enable the efficient management of fluctuating renewable energy feed-in and prevent grid bottlenecks. “The digitization of the grids is the key to ensuring security of supply even in an energy system with a high share of renewable energy,” explains Prof. Wolter. Battery storage, smart control systems, and AI-supported technologies play a crucial role in this.
Prof. Wolter and his team are working on practical solutions that not only improve grid stability but can also reduce the costs of grid expansion. The goal is to create a sustainable and stable energy system that meets the demands of the future. “Our research combines technological innovation with societal responsibility,” emphasizes Prof. Wolter.
