SICK AG, founded by Dr Erwin Sick, is a manufacturer of intelligent and innovative sensors in the fields of factory, logistics and process automation. To promote engineering and natural sciences at the TUD, the Gisela and Erwin Sick Foundation awards three prizes totalling 10,000 euros each year.
This year, the Gisela and Erwin Sick Foundation's university prize for measurement systems technology goes to Dr Jiawei Sun from the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Information Technology for his dissertation on the topic: "Learning-based three-dimensional optical cell rotation tomography and quantitative phase imaging with multicore fibres".
Dr Giuseppe Ciccone from the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering and Dr Kai Geißdörfer from the Faculty of Computer Science were awarded the prize for Measurement and Sensor Technology from the Faculty of Engineering. Both were honoured for their outstanding doctoral theses. Ciccone wrote his thesis on "Novel OLED architectures for multicolour optogenetics", while Geißdörfer dealt with "Methods and Tools for Battery-free Wireless Networks" in his dissertation.
Yuan Sui was honoured with the Gisela and Erwin Sick Foundation's Young Talent Award. He was honoured for his dissertation entitled "High-fidelity transmission through multimode fibres using deep learning".
University Prize for Measurement Technology
This year, the Gisela and Erwin Sick Foundation's University Prize for Metrology went to Dr. Jiawei Sun from the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Information Technology for his dissertation on "Learning-based three-dimensional optical cell rotation tomography and quantitative phase imaging with multinuclear fibres". The prize is endowed with 5,000 euros and is awarded for an outstanding dissertation.
