Planning and operation of grids
Planning and operation of electrical grids have undergone a long process of evolution since the beginning of electrification. More and more generators and consumers have been connected to the electrical power supply networks in order to ensure, for example, the highest possible system security. The essential components of the current system are still conventional large-scale power plants, which do not only provide a lot of power, but also make a significant contribution to safe operation with their instantaneous reserves and short-circuit power.
With the beginning of the energy transition, there is a trend towards decentralized energy resources (DERs), primarily based on wind and solar energy. Additionally, new types of hybrid loads are becoming increasingly common, e.g. electric storage devices and charging infrastructure for electric mobility concepts. All these loads should be taken into account both when planning future networks and operating the current energy supply system
