Smart Grid
Switching to renewable energy generation from, for example, photovoltaics and wind energy requires a comprehensive restructuring of the existing energy supply and increased convergence between different energy sources. Smart grids are an essential part of the future energy supply. Through the communication and intelligent control of all consumption and generation units in a Smart Grid, flexibility potential for ensuring the performance balance is tapped, network bottlenecks are avoided and reliability is increased by a cellular structure of the overall system.
The IEEH's Smart Grid working group investigates and develops different aspects of the Smart Grid in various research projects. Special attention is paid to the networking between the electrical and thermal energy supply. System services, for example, can be offered through the targeted use of the heat accumulators in buildings.

- Regional, virtual power plant based on mini and micro cogeneration technology - Intelligent networking of thermal and electrical consumer systems
- Combined Energy Lab - thermal and electrical test facility for testing micro-cogeneration plants
- Intelligent load control to avoid network bottlenecks
