Abstract
Adding the haptic feedback of object into virtual realities is a current research area.
The existing concepts for displaying object lack of resolution, are not sufficient in
their size and/or need many actuators.
This Thesis includes a Description of current Systems and their limits. This is the
motivation to develop an optimized haptic surface. The approach of particle jamming
is considered a well-suited solution. This caused the development and testing of
prototypes which are based on this technology.
The developed haptic surface consists out of a flexible elastomer in the shape of
multiple chambers. They are filled with coffee grounds and can be evacuated. This
enables the surface to change its stiffness. With a stamping mold, it is possible to
change the shape of the surface. The system only needs one actuator to drive the
stamping mold and a vacuum source to adjust the surface stiffness.
