Abstract
Focus of this work is the development of the manufacturing technology for the multi-layered-Lab-on-a-chip System (MLoC-System), which uses thermoplastic Elastomer (TPE) membrane as an actuator component to control the fluid flow in its own three-dimensional structure. Usually, the polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) is mostly used for such a membrane, because it is fexible, optically clear, and easy to mold. However, it possesses signifcant challenges for high volume manufacturing. Thus, the TPE material, which not only exhibits the physical properties, including controllable elasticity, optical clarity, and high cell compatibility but also amenable to mass production by injection molding and extrusion methods, has gradually become a new trend for manufacturing such the microfluidic systems. Speaking to the manufacturing technology, the thermal diffusion bonding process is involved in this work, by which the three-dimensional de-vice integrated micro pumps, valves and channels are realized by stacking the struc-tured layer one by one, then it is going to be bonded tightly either in the oven or by a hot-pressing machine. In addition, in order to ensure the accurate alignment of each layer during the bonding process, a new bonding tool has been designed.
