East Saxon math and computer science camp for girls
This year's East Saxon Math and Computer Science Camp for girls took place in the second week of the fall holidays with the active participation of the EduInf Department of Computer Science Education.
In the middle of the Lusatian heath and pond landscape, almost 50 schoolgirls from grades 7 to 12 met at the KiEZ am Braunsteich Weißwasser to attend five days of math and computer science circles. A varied leisure program took place in the afternoons.
In the robotics workshop, the pupils in grades 7 and 8 got to know the Calliope Mini and explored its components. Using the Calli:bot extension, they programmed a mobile robot for a Mario Kart-like course. This encouraged programming skills, creativity and logical thinking.
In the stamp workshop, the participants in grades 9 and 10 used BlocksCAD for 2D and 3D modeling. They created ink pads with the laser cutter and stamp handles with the 3D printer. At the end, each student had a self-designed and manufactured stamp - a practical application of mathematics and computer science in the creative field.
A programming workshop using the CMU CS Academy graphics library was offered for A-level 11 and 12 students. The students created their own environment of the Game of Life developed by mathematician John Horton Conway. This algorithm was also the subject of a mathematics workshop the previous year. This shows the great potential of the camp to design mathematics and computer science workshops in such a way that they contribute to mutual understanding.
