Faculty specific information
We are delighted that you are considering studying at the Faculty of Computer Science at TU Dresden! International applicants for an exchange must first apply to our International Office. Details can be found here.
The academic calendar
In Germany, the academic year is divided into winter and summer semesters. In addition to the major summer vacation, there are also a few lecture-free weeks in October, at Christmas and at Whitsun. You can find the exact dates in the TU Dresden academic calendar.
Timetable
Each teaching block lasts 90 minutes. This corresponds to 2 SWS (semester hours per week). There is a 20-minute break in between. You can find a timetable here.
To avoid conflicts in the schedule, you should choose modules from a degree program. Nevertheless, there may be time overlaps. In particular, if modules are chosen that are assigned to the compulsory elective area of the degree program, it cannot be guaranteed that there will be no overlaps.
How do I choose courses for my Learning Agreement?
Learning Agreements are created based on modules from our module catalog.
Please note: Modules can consist of one or more courses. You will only receive ECTS for fully completed modules.
You can find the modules offered for exchange students in our module database. This is available in German and English and can be searched by degree program, semester, etc. You will also find detailed module descriptions in German and English as PDF downloads.
- Check these descriptions for content and qualification objectives, teaching period (i.e. whether the module is offered in the winter or summer semester), examinations, workload, etc.
- Choose as many ECTS per semester as specified by your home institution! If you are not sure or have not been given any guidelines, put together modules worth 25-30 credits!
Note: In the German module descriptions, credit points (or ECTS) are called "Leistungspunkte" (LP). - Make sure that you can complete the selected modules within your mobility period. Some modules run over two semesters. You may not be able to complete these if you are only studying with us for one semester! In the module description you will find information on the "Duration of the module".
- Please note that you must choose at least 70% of your modules from the Faculty of Computer Science's range!
-
The selected modules must be entered in Table A of the Learning Agreement and signed by the student and the exchange coordinators of both universities. Our coordinator will sign your Learning Agreement digitally, regardless of whether your home university uses OLA or you send the Learning Agreement as a PDF by e-mail.
-
The assignment of specific courses/lectures to the corresponding modules can be found in the catalog of courses offered in the respective semester.
Please note! The actual "course offerings" are usually only available a few weeks or days before the start of the semester. However, you can use the courses offered in the previous winter/summer semester as a guide! - ECTS credits are only awarded for successfully completed modules!
Adjustments to the Learning Agreement
- You must prepare a first draft of your Learning Agreement with your application to the TUD Dresden University of Technology. Please read the points described above carefully and contact our subject coordinator if you have any questions! He or she is ultimately responsible for confirming the draft of your Learning Agreement by signing it. If there are any fundamental problems with the modules entered in the draft Learning Agreement (Table A), please contact our subject coordinator. In the event of minor discrepancies, she will sign your Learning Agreement with the note that the Learning Agreement must be adjusted after your arrival. Please check whether your Learning Agreement contains this note! If it does, it must be checked and, if necessary, amended at the beginning of the semester.
- After your arrival , you should compare the information in your Learning Agreement with the modules actually offered. The actual course offerings may change slightly up to two weeks after the start of the semester. It can also happen that courses in the modules specified in your Learning Agreement overlap.
In these cases, adjustments to the Learning Agreement (Table A2) are necessary. Please make sure that you make the necessary adjustments, otherwise you may not be able to take the examinations and could end up missing the required ECTS credits.
Adjustments to the Learning Agreement must be submitted to the subject coordinator no later than 8 weeks after the start of the semester in order not to jeopardize examination registrations.
Required language skills
Please note that most of our courses in the Bachelor's degree programs in Computer Science and Applied Computer Science are held in German. Your German language skills should be good enough to follow the courses (at least B1 in the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages).
Our Master's programs in Computer Science and Computational Modeling and Simulation are taught in English. For courses from these programs, English language skills of at least B2 level are recommended.
Contact details for your Learning Agreement
Please enter the contact details of the Faculty of Computer Science's exchange program coordinator in the Learning Agreement (see contact details)!
You can find relevant information about welcome events and your first weeks at TU Dresden here.
Handbooks in German and English can be downloaded here.
If you have any further questions, please contact our tutors.
Selma
Exchange students can use Selma like regular students to register for exams, modules and courses (the latter only in rare cases). You can also view and download personal documents such as your certificate of enrollment or your transcript of records (on request from the Examination Office).
It is important to register for examinations in Selma so that you can be credited for the modules you have completed.
If you wish to attend modules from other faculties and have them examined, please contact the Examination Office of the Faculty of Computer Science at the beginning of the semester. Don't forget to submit the confirmed Learning Agreement! The colleagues at the Examination Office will release the modules not offered at the Faculty of Computer Science in selma so that you can register for these examinations.
OPAL
OPALis the central online learning platform at Saxon universities. Teaching staff provide materials and information about courses via this platform.
Register for your courses in good time ! The links to the corresponding OPAL pages are usually linked on the websites of the Chair offering the corresponding course or can be found using the search function: Simply copy the course name and make sure that you are enrolled in the current course! Older courses from previous semesters often remain on the platform after they have ended.
Language courses
Preparatory German courses
Before the semester starts, you have the opportunity to take part in intensive German courses. Language courses are offered by the TUDIAS Language Center. You can find more information about course offers, times and fees on the TUDIAS website.
German courses during the semester
You can also take German courses during the semester. These are free of charge and suitable for many different language levels. A prerequisite for course participation is the completion of a placement test.
You can find more information here: Language courses at TU Dresden
Sports program
Various sports courses are offered at TU Dresden. If you want to register, you should be quick, as there are only a limited number of places available each semester.
The courses are offered by the Dresden University Sports Center.
Modules conclude with the examinations specified in the module descriptions. Examinations can be written, oral on special dates or over the course of the semester (usually for projects).
Registration for examinations needs to be done via Selma.
Please note that the registration periods for different types of examinations may vary! The specific registration periods for each type of examination are published on the website of the Examination Office. You will usually also receive reminders by email.
It is not possible to register for examinations outside of these periods!
Transcript of Records
Please note that your transcript of records is not created automatically! You must first contact the Examination Office of the Faculty of Computer Science and ask for the transcript of records to be provided.
Confirmation of Attendance (Aufenthaltsbescheinigung)
If you need a confirmation of attendance for your exchange at TU Dresden, please contact the International Office of TU Dresden.
