Geometry processing is a research area that has evolved inside the computer graphics community in the 1990s. It addresses the processing of digital 3D models with a focus on simple surface representations like point clouds, polygonal meshes or discretized implicit functions. Further attributes like material properties and texture coordinates are subsumed in the term geometry. The most important processing tasks are
- conversion between representations and the reconstruction of surface models from 3D scans
- registration and fusion, repair, denoising, hole-filling and completion, parameterization of 3D models
- simplification, construction of multi-resolution models and compression
- efficient and intuitive editing of complex 3D models
- geometric, topological and statistical shaped analysis, shape similarity and shape retrieval
- dynamic surface processing, simulation techniques on surfaces and of evolving surfaces
Most important application areas are reverse engineering, cultural heritage, computer-aided design, scientific and biomedical computing, as well as the entertainment industry. The research in geometry processing at the chair of computer graphics focuses on simplification, compression and 3D scan processing.
