Both concepts follow a similar content orientation.
The most significant difference is, that the bachelor/master model certifies the trainee after only 3 years of studying a first professional qualification.
The diploma degree is most highly recognised in Germany and most parts of Europe, whereas the significance of the bachelor degree is still developing. However for the american and asian markets you are more valuable with a graduation as bachelor or master.
With the possibility to attend modules in a “minor subject”, work on a "student research project" (aka Großer Beleg) in preparation for the diploma thesis, to “analyse a research topic” and have a whole semester for a qualifying internship, the focus of the diploma studies is highly set on research and practical relevance. On the contrary you have to forego “Introduction to Computer Graphics” and “Introduction to media informatics” (integral part of the Bachelor's programme) and “research and development in computer science” (module of the Master’s programme) while studying the diploma programme.
Being prepared is very important and increases safety. Therefore various institutions offer pre-courses, also known as “bridging courses” specifically for MINT subjects in the field of mathematics, computer science, natural sciences and technology.
Examples are:
- the Bridging Course Mathematics of the Faculty of Mathematics of the TU Dresden
- the online preparation course Mathematics of the team Online Preparation Courses of the TU Dresden
- the preparatory course in engineering sciences at TU Dresden
- the online mathematics bridging course OMB+
- the online bridging course in mathematics of the VE&MINT project
