Master Programmes
Sorry - this document is available in German only.
As soon as you have completed at least 80% of all required examinations in the Bachelor's degree program (i.e. the corresponding credit points have been proven), you can apply to study in one of the Master's degree programs at the Faculty of Computer Science at TU Dresden. Please note the corresponding admission requirements under [Master Computer Science] /[Master Media Computer Science]! If you meet the admission requirements, please submit an application to determine your eligibility [ Master of Computer Science] / [Master of Media Computer Science]. Please also note the information on the aptitude assessment procedure on the websites linked above!
Even if it is possible to enrol in the Master's degree program even though you have only completed 80% of the regular examinations of your Bachelor's degree program, you should bear in mind that you may have a double load in the first semester of your Master's degree program: on the one hand, you will have to complete the missing examinations of your Bachelor's degree program and, on the other hand, the Master's degree program will start with courses. In the Master's degree programs in particular, many courses are only offered every two semesters. This means that your degree course may be extended if you decide to postpone these courses in the Master's degree course by one year due to the examination load of the Bachelor's degree course.
The application deadlines can be found on the website of the Admissions Office. In principle, the following deadlines apply to the Master of Computer Science and Master of Media Computer Science programmes:
- For German applicants:
- for the winter semester: 01.06. to 15.07.
- for the summer semester: 01.12. to 15.01.
- For foreign applicants:
- for the winter semester: 01.04. to 31.05.
- for the summer semester: 01.10. to 30.11.
The first point of contact for information on the Master's programmes are the websites on the programmes and, in particular, for the admission process itself (e.g. Informatik, Medieninformatik). If you think that you meet all admission requirements and have all the necessary documents, then start the online application via the application portal of the TU Dresden.
On the entry website of the application portal, scroll down to the very bottom and answer the questions by selecting them:
- of nationality
- the type of degree programme: "continuing studies leading to a further higher education degree (e.g. Master's)".
- Approval free or restricted: "free
- Subject-related semester: this is usually the "1st FS", unless you wish to continue with a Master's programme
- Place of acquisition of the higher education entrance qualification or 1st university degree
In the majority of cases (standard for the above answers as well as German nationality and place of acquisition of the higher education entrance qualification = "German university") you will then be redirected to the TUD Portal 7.
Once you have gone through all the steps of the online application, print out the application form via the portal. You send the application together with the form:
- the application form,
- officially certified copy of the first professionally qualifying university degree (Bachelor's certificate) or the 80% certificate available at the examination office
- the completed and signed application form to establish suitability,
- Officially authenticated evidence of academic achievements, e.g. "Certificate of academic achievement", "Transcript of Records", "Attestation of academic achievement", "Grading scale" in German or as an official English translation,
- proof of English language skills and
- the module handbook or module descriptions (German or English) (if proven achievements have been acquired outside of a computer science/media computer science degree programme at Dresden University of Technology)

1. Attention! The mentions of "free admission" and "restricted admission" are formulated in a misleading manner with regard to study programmes with aptitude assessment procedures and only refer to the distinction between study programmes with/without NC! The aptitude assessment procedure serves to decide on admission based on subject-related requirements.
2. Attention! The application deadlines for the Master's programmes in Computer Science and Media Informatics are 15 July (for the winter semester) and 15 January (for the summer semester).
As soon as the assessment procedure has been successfully completed, the Aptitude Committee of the Faculty of Computer Science will forward the application documents to the Admissions Office.
The Admissions Office will then send you an e-mail informing you that a document containing all the information you need to prepare your matriculation has been filed in the document folder in the Selma portal.
If all documents are complete, the staff at the Admissions Office will check whether there are still reasons for refusing matriculation in accordance with the Matriculation Regulations or whether there is a claim in accordance with the University Fee Regulations. If this is not the case, you will be enrolled in the Master's programme after receipt of the semester fee, i.e.
- the semester form (including the student ID=semester ticket),
- a letter from the Admissions Office with information on the welcome events of the faculties,
- an invitation to the ceremonial enrolment of the Rector and
- a bonus booklet from the Studentenwerk (semester bonus) will be sent by post.
It is not possible to complete a Bachelor's programme during the Master's programme. To do so, you must be enrolled in your Bachelor's programme (see also the following FAQ). Therefore, you will study in two degree programmes during your first Master's semester. To ensure that this is formally correct, you must submit an application for parallel studies in good time.
If you are enrolled in the Master's programme via the 80% rule, this means that you are enrolled in both the Bachelor's programme and the Master's programme. This should give you the opportunity to take the remaining required examinations of the Bachelor's programme within one semester. Please note that the time frame of one semester is a strict time limit! If you miss completing your Bachelor's programme within this one semester, you will be automatically de-registered from the Master's programme by the Admissions Office.
Yes, the application form must always be filled out, because although you could, for example, fulfil the requirement of having completed 80% of all the work required for a bachelor's degree, you may still be missing exactly one decisive examination grade to prove that you have the required credit points in a subject area. This could be, for example, the missing examination paper for computer architecture. In this case, you would be missing 2 credit points in the subject area "Computer Engineering" to be admitted to the Master's programme in Computer Science.
There are guide lists for graduates of the Bachelor's programmes in Computer Science and Media Informatics who apply for the respective Master's programmes:
