Become a Young Investigator at the Faculty of Computer Science
The status "TUD Young Investigator" supports independent Junior Research Group Leaders through stronger integration into the Faculty and the FAST FORWARD qualification program specifically tailored to them.
Procedure for the selection of TUD Young Investigators at the Faculty of Computer Science
Criteria: formal / university-wide
• Junior Research Group Leader with a fixed-term appointment at TU Dresden or a partner
institution of the DRESDEN-concept alliance.
• Own budget and personnel responsibility
• Scientific independence without thematic subordination to a Chair
• Independent leadership of a research group consisting of at least two scientists
(excluding the head of the group)
• Completed doctorate with at least a very good grade (if applicable) and habilitation
adequate achievement.
Criteria: content / faculty-specific
• Thematic focus of research in a computer science topic
• Intention and ability to teach in at least one field of computer science
• International visibility and networking (e.g. presence at conferences)
• Proficiency in written and spoken English
• Experience in the acquisition of third-party funding or participation in collaborative
projects
• Benefit/contribution to the Faculty
• At least 2 years remaining employment at the home institution
Procedure:
• The selection takes place twice a year on fixed dates, at the beginning of March and
beginning of September (during the lecture-free period in order to avoid clashes
with courses).
• The dates are set by the Dean by the beginning of the year at the latest.
• The selection committee consists of one representative from each institute of the Faculty
of Computer Science (head of an institute or his/her delegate) in order to ensure
thematic breadth as well as a representative of the faculty management.
• Candidates must apply in writing to the Dean no later than 2 months before the
selection date. The application documents must include at least: curriculum vitae, list of
publications, list of third-party funding and participation in collaborative projects, list of
teaching experience (teaching evaluations if available), research concept for the next 3
years (max. 3 A4 pages), concept for the integration into our Faculty with planned
collaborations and planned teaching contributions (max. 1 DIN A4 page).
• The selection committee reviews the application documents and decides who will be
invited to the selection talk. Candidates who are not invited will be informed
immediately in writing.
• The selection talks are open to the faculty and are announced to all faculty members at
least one month in advance.
• A selection talk consists of: an academic talk of 30 minutes in English, a teaching sample
of 15 minutes in German or English on a topic specified by the topic from the candidate's
field of work specified by the committee.
• The presentations will be followed by a 45-minute closed questioning session for each
candidate by the selection committee.
• The selection committee decides, if necessary after consultation with other colleagues,
on admission or non-admission. Candidates will be informed immediately in writing.
• Rejected applicants may be encouraged to reapply with a revised concept. This should
remain the exception.
