On May 3, the Gisela and Erwin Sick Foundation awards ceremony took place in the University Executive Board's ballroom. Following the award ceremony, SICK AG and the Gisela and Erwin Sick Foundation invited employees and students to the Bärengarten in the Alte Mensa to celebrate the award winners with beer and pretzels and to exchange ideas.
The following prizes were awarded at the event:
University Prize for Measurement Technology
This year's Gisela and Erwin Sick Foundation University Prize for Measurement Systems Engineering went to Dr. Jiawei Sun from the Faculty of Electrical and Computer Engineering for his dissertation on "Learning-based Three-Dimensional Optical Cell Rotation Tomography and Quantitative Phase Imaging Using Multi-Core Fibers". The prize is endowed with 5,000 euros and is awarded for an outstanding dissertation.
Prize for Measurement and Sensor Technology in the School of Engineering Sciences
Dr. Giuseppe Ciccone from the Faculty of Mechanical Science and Engineering and Dr. Kai Geißdörfer from the Faculty of Computer Science were awarded the Prize for Measurement and Sensor Technology from the School of Engineering Sciences. Both were honored for their outstanding doctoral theses. Ciccone wrote his thesis on "Novel OLED architectures for multicolor optogenetics", while Geißdörfer's dissertation dealt with "Methods and Tools for Battery-free Wireless Networks". The prizes for measurement and sensor technology from the Gisela and Erwin Siek Foundation are endowed with a total of 4,500 euros and are awarded for several outstanding works, such as dissertations, diploma or master's theses as well as student research projects or bachelor's theses. Eligible for submission are theses completed in the School of Engineering Sciences at TU Dresden that have been awarded the grades "very good" or "excellent / distinction".
Young Talent Award for Measurement and Sensor Systems Technology
Yuan Sui from the Faculty of Electrical and Computer Engineering was awarded the Gisela and Erwin Sick Foundation's Young Talent Award. He was honored for his diploma thesis entitled "High-fidelity transmission through multimode fibers using deep learning". The Young Talent Awards have a total endowment of 500 euros and can be awarded to one or more outstanding diploma, master's, degree, research or bachelor's theses from the Chair of Measurement and Sensor System Technique (MST) in the Faculty of Electrical and Computer Engineering at TU Dresden.
SICK AG, founded by Dr. Erwin Sick, is a manufacturer of intelligent and innovative sensors in the fields of factory, logistics and process automation. To promote engineering and natural sciences at TUD, the Gisela and Erwin Sick Foundation annually awards three prizes worth a total of 10,000 euros.
