Who Will Win the Race Back to the Moon: Martin Tajmar in MDR Interview

The space programs of the United States and China are increasingly focused on future missions to the Moon. In a report by MDR WISSEN, Prof. Martin Tajmar, director of the Institute of Aerospace Engineering at TU Dresden, also shares his insights. He contextualizes current developments within the international race to return to the Moon.

The Institute of Aerospace Engineering at TU Dresden is also working on key technologies for the sustainable exploration of the Moon and other celestial bodies. This includes research on safe landing sites and on protecting lunar infrastructure from kicked-up lunar dust as part of the ESA project LUNAR ISLANDS, as well as wearable systems such as MetabolicSpace, which can be used to monitor the capabilities of astronauts. This work is complemented by research on planetary habitats and the use of local resources, as well as by innovative exploration methods such as a laser drill developed at the ILR for ice-covered celestial bodies. The Cisluna project is also investigating the technical foundations and feasibility of a scalable system for tracking and evaluating space activities in cislunar space between Earth and the Moon.
