Product development involves anticipating a technical solution that does not yet exist in terms of function, design, manufacturing, use, and so on. To illustrate and document the future product, various forms of product representation are used, such as drawings, calculations, or models. The use of computer-aided methods makes it possible to create a digital description of the product. The product model consists of a multitude of submodels—such as product requirements, design drafts, CAD models, FEM calculations, work plans, and maintenance instructions—which must be managed, stored, and distributed securely and in a structured manner. This is the task of Product Data Management (PDM). Optimizing its design is a major challenge in modern product development. |
