Capacity development in the water sector is an essential component for developing countries to meet both their national sustainable development agendas, as well as their international obligations such as the sustainable development goals. Research in developing countries is another essential component needed to help inform evidence-based decision making to meet sustainability targets. ‘Capacity Building through Research’ (CBtR) or ‘research capacity building’ (RCB) approaches (as called in the health sciences) provides a mechanism to enhance the capacity of local experts in the water sector, and at the same time provide the evidence needed for decision-makers to help guide them to meeting their sustainability targets. CBtR has been trialled in several different Dutch and Australian funded programs and smaller individual projects.

Furthermore, we initiated several collaborative research and training projects, leapfrogging novel technologies in Myanmar’s water sector. We will highlight a few demonstrator projects, focussing on water (quality) monitoring and measuring, to exemplify our approach of bringing together enterprises, young university staff, Dutch and Myanmar students and institutional stakeholders, and discuss opportunities and challenges.
