Equal Pay Day 2024
The Equal Pay Day campaign aims to draw attention to the pay gap between women and men. This year the Equal Pay Day will fall on March 6th. The motto of the new campaign is "High time for equal pay!". The initiative focuses on the connection between time and money and shows what solutions are available for a fair distribution of time. After all, the saying "time is money" is more than just an empty phrase. While almost every second woman works part-time in order to take on the majority of family, household and care responsibilities, only one in ten men works part-time. The high proportion of women working part-time has a significant impact on the gender pay gap. This indicates the difference in earnings between men and women, with women earning an average of 18% less per hour than men in 2022. "The division - men full-time and women part-time - does not necessarily correspond to their wishes, but has a lot to do with stereotypical role attributions and structural hurdles. Working time is therefore also a question of gender equality," says Margit Gottstein, State Secretary at the Federal Ministry for Gender Equality. What changes are necessary so that care work, paid work and leisure time can be shared equally? Is the 4-day week a solution or shorter full-time working hours? How can job sharing or digitalization contribute to this? You can find more information, including on campaigns relating to Equal Pay Day, here.
