Diabetes researcher from UCSF becomes Honorary Professor at TU Dresden
The Rector of TU Dresden, Prof. Hans Müller-Steinhagen, appoints Matthias Hebrok as Honorary Professor in "Cell Biology of the Pancreas" at the Center for Molecular and Cellular Bioengineering (CMCB) of the Technical University of Dresden.
Prof. Matthias Hebrok is Hurlbut-Johnson Distinguished Professor in Diabetes Research and Associate Professor of Medicine at the Diabetes Center of the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF). He is an internationally leading scientist in his field, who will also be working in Dresden in the coming semesters. He will bring in his knowhow focused on cell, molecular and developmental biology tools to decipher the mechanisms underlying pancreatic diseases. Together with the experts of the Paul Langerhans Institute Dresden, the scientists and physicians of the CMCB, the Max-Planck Institute for Cell Biology and Genetics and the Medical Faculty, he aims to develop new methods for the generation of functional insulin-producing beta cells from human stem cell populations and expand the clinical translation program.
"With the appointment of Prof. Matthias Hebrok, the TU Dresden is strengthening research in the field of diabetes and stem cells. The long-term goal of this research is the use of hESC/ iPSC-derived beta-like cells also in people suffering from diabetes. We warmly welcome Matthias to our network", says Prof. Ezio Bonifacio, Professor at the CRTD.
