Tiago Alves becomes PLID faculty member
The faculty of the Paul Langerhans Institute Dresden (PLID) got a new member. Dr. Tiago Alves, head of the Metabolic Flux group at Institute for Clinical Chemistry and Laboratory Medicine at the University Hospital Carl Gustav Carus of TU Dresden joined the faculty as of June 2020.
Dr. Alves obtained his PhD in 2010 following his studies on the relationship between tissue-specific regulation of glucose and fatty acid oxidation and the development of insulin resistance, a collaboration between Universidade de Coimbra (Portugal) and Yale University (USA). During his postdoctoral training, he specialized on the role of glucose metabolism in the regulation of insulin secretion in beta-cells. In November 2018, he became group leader at the Institute for Clinical Chemistry and Laboratory Medicine (IKL) at the University Hospital Carl Gustav Carus of TU Dresden.
Dr. Alves performs stable isotope metabolic flux analysis for a more dynamic understanding of the mechanism of metabolic regulation. The high sensitivity and resolution of his approach enables the characterization of the magnitude and direction of individual metabolic reactions, which is key to link metabolism with cellular function.
