Postdoc Appreciation Week 2024 | Margrit Kamel
What is your name?
Margrit Kamel
Which research group are you in?
Ninov lab
Where are you from?
Egypt
What topic do you research?
Developmental origins of metabolic disease.
Why/how did you become involved in this subject?
The primary research focus of the lab is diabetes, but I have always been deeply fascinated by the intricate and highly regulated processes of development. I realized that I could combine these interests by exploring how developmental mechanisms influence organ function and contribute to disease progression later in life. This approach allows me to connect the lab's focus on diabetes with my passion for developmental biology, providing a unique perspective on how early-life processes impact health outcomes in adulthood.
What is your favorite part of working as a Postdoc at the PLID?
The interdisciplinary approach and the opportunity to learn from other scientists.
What are some challenges you face day to day as a Postdoc?
Balancing work and life while managing the stress associated with limited contract funding is a challenging aspect of my professional journey.
What motivates you?
I have a deep love for solving puzzles, and with every new experiment, we uncover another piece of the intricate puzzle that is human biology.
What do you like to do when you are not in the lab?
I have a deep passion for traveling and connecting with new people. Each journey is an opportunity to explore different cultures and build meaningful relationships.
If you could visit yourself while you were still a student, what advice would you offer?
Less advice, more reassurance: what's meant to be yours will always find its way to you.
