Spectroscopy and electrocatalysis
The efficiency and selectivity of many sensors and fuel cells is based on electrocatalytic processes. A good catalyst not only decreases the activation energy for a reaction as much as possible but also promotes („catalyses“) very specifically a certain target reaction. In electrocatalysis the catalytic process takes place at the surface of a conductive support and is coupled to an electron transfer process. These catalysts, when incorporated as working electrode in an electrochemical cell, can directly transform electrical energy in chemical energy and vice versa.
