Condensed matter physics is concerned with the development and investigation of new materials with unusual electrical, magnetic, or mechanical properties that exist because of the interaction between structure and chemical composition and can be altered through appropriate structuring or chemical doping. The "palette" of materials under investigation ranges from intermetallic compounds to semiconducting materials and into organics, and the structure of samples may be a single crystal, composite, thin film, or nanostructure.

The spectrum of investigative methods is equally as wide, encompassing low-energy characterisation techniques that measure conductivity, magnetisation, and thermal properties, electronic, optical, and ultra-high-speed spectroscopy, as well as structural characterisation with electron and x-ray microscopy, scanning probe methods, and diffraction techniques using photons, electrons, or neutrons. The development of new methods is also included. This work predominantly advances basic research, but is also useful in technical applications, especially organic components and the development of superconducting and magnetically hard materials.
