Chair of Surface Physics
(Prof. Dr. C. Laubschat)
The Chair of Surface Physics, owner Prof. Dr. Clemens Laubschat, is concerned with the investigation of the electronic structure of solids with special consideration of surface and interfacial phenomena. Methodically, mainly angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy (ARPES) is used, partly using synchrotron radiation (BESSY II/ Berlin, SLS/Villigen, ALS/Berkeley, ...) as well as X-ray absorption spectroscopy, Auger spectroscopy and inverse photoemission. The experiments are mainly performed on monocrystalline samples or epitaxial thin films, which are prepared in-situ and structurally characterized by low-energy electron diffraction (LEED) and photoelectron diffraction (PED).
A major focus of our work is on intermetallic compounds of rare earths and uranium. In addition to the electronic band structure, these investigations focus on questions of the interaction of the localized f-electrons with the valence band, which give rise to correlation phenomena such as Kondo lattices, heavy fermions or mixed valences, as well as transitions of the f-electrons from a localized to an itinerant behavior.
Another research focus is on low-dimensional systems, which are generated by intercalation of foreign atoms in layered crystals such as graphite or graphene and lead to unusual, strongly anisotropic material properties.
The research group is participating in CRC 1143 and RTG 1621 and strongly involved in the operation of the Russian-German Laboratory (RGL) at BESSY II, Berlin, consisting on two beamlines in the soft X-ray regime with two ARPES-spectrometers, one of them equipped with a spin-detector. Respective work is performed in close cooperation with Prof. Dr. E. Rühl, FU Berlin, Prof. Dr. O. Rader, HZB Berlin, Prof. Dr. Denis Vyalikh, DIPC, San Sebastián, Spain, Dr. D. Usachov, St. Petersburg State University, Russia, and Dr. L. Yashina, Lomonossov University Moscow, Russia.
Monocrystalline samples are mainly provided by the materials lab, IFW Dresden, as well as by Dr. C. Geibel, MPI CPfS Dresden, and Prof. Dr. C. Krellner, Frankfurt University. Concerning theory, close cooperation exists with the theory group at the IFW Dresden as well as with Prof. Dr. E. Chulkov, San Sebastián, Spanien, Dr. K. Matho, Grenoble, France, and Dr. Yu. Kucherenko, Kiev, Ukraine.
