The Next Generation of Fusion Research: IKTP Participates in the SAXFUSION Summer School
How can nuclear fusion be realized as a sustainable energy source of the future? This is the question addressed by the SAXFUSION Summer School, which will take place from August 31 to September 4, 2026, in Dresden and at other locations in Saxony, with the participation of researchers from the Institute of Nuclear and Particle Physics at TU Dresden.
The summer school is aimed at students who have completed at least a bachelor’s degree, as well as doctoral candidates and early-career researchers with a strong interest in the natural sciences and engineering. The goal is to provide insights into current fusion research and the innovation ecosystem of the Saxon research consortium SAXFUSION.
The program covers a wide range of topics, from the physical fundamentals of nuclear fusion and laser-driven fusion concepts to high-power lasers, extreme states of matter, particle beams, and modern simulation methods. Other topics include the role of fusion energy in future energy systems and the development of components and materials for fusion facilities.
In addition to specialized lectures, the summer school offers visits to facilities within the SAXFUSION network, including the Helmholtz-Zentrum Dresden-Rossendorf (HZDR), TU Dresden, several Fraunhofer Institutes, and other research institutions and universities in Saxony. Participants will thus gain an interdisciplinary insight into current research, technological developments, and industrial perspectives on fusion energy.
The event will be conducted entirely in English. Participation is free of charge; participants are responsible for their own travel, accommodation, and meal expenses. The application deadline is July 26, 2026.
