Aetiology and course of addictive behaviours
This research area focuses on risk factors for the development and course of substance-related disorders and non-substance-related addictive behaviours (e.g., gambling disorder). Long-term goal of this basic research is the translation of results into clinical research and into practical applications for early detection, prevention and treatment of these disorders.

Current projects
L1 Impulsivity and online sports betting behavior: Untangling the causal relationship
Aims: To apply a cross-lagged panel design to determine whether increased impulsivity causes risky online betting behavior that in turn leads to GD.
Staff: Dipl.-Psych. Anne Jacob, Dip.-Psych. Robert Czernecka
PI: Dr. Anja Kräplin
Funding: International Center for Responsible Gaming (ICRG)
Duration: 04/2023 – 03/2025
L2 Volitional dysfunction in self-control failures and addictive behaviours
Aims: To investigate whether impaired cognitive control, performance-monitoring, value-based decision-making and dysfunctional interactions between the underlying brain systems constitute vulnerability factors or mediating mechanisms underlying non-pathological daily self-control failures as well as addictive behaviours.
Pls: Prof. Dr. Thomas Goschke, Prof. Dr. Gerhard Bühringer, Prof. Dr. Michael Smolka
Funding: DFG, subproject of the SFB940
Duration: 07/2012 – 06/2020 (second funding period)
L3 Characteristics and prediction of risky gambling behavior
Aims: The RIGAB study aims to characterize players with risky gambling behavior, participating in online sports betting, compared to players without risky gambling behavior concerning individual risk factors. Subsequently we can use this characterization to test whether it predicts (the progression of) risky gambling behavior and the onset of a gambling disorder.
Pls: Prof. Dr. Gerhard Bühringer and Dr. rer. nat. habil. Anja Kräplin
Staff: Dipl. Psych. Robert Czernecka und M. Sc. Theresa Wirkus
Funding: unrestricted research grant from Tipico Co. Ltd. to TU Dresden in order to promote research on gambling disorder
Duration: 04/2020 – 07/2023
Completed projects
Aims: Re-analysis of data from the project "Course and Stability of Problematic Computer Gaming Behavior over a Three-Year Period" regarding the role of inhibitory control and decision-making behavior in the course of Internet gaming disorder.

PIs of the primary project: Prof. Thomas Mößle, Dr. Florian Rehbein (Kriminologisches Forschungsinstitut Niedersachsen)
PIs of the secondary analyses: Prof. Thomas Mößle, Dr. Florian Rehbein, Prof. Dr. Thomas Goschke, Prof. Dr. Gerhard Bühringer
Duration: 03/2011 – 05/2015
Aims: To clarify the patterns, context specificity and retest-reliability of impairments in decision-making and cognitive control functions in nicotine dependence and pathological gambling.
Staff: Dipl.-Psych. Anja Kräplin
