Workshops in the winter semester 2023/24
From october 11th to december 13th the Writing Center of the TU Dresden and the SLUB offer a joint series of events on the basics of scientific reading and writing (events in German).
When and where:
- on Wednesdays, 4th double period (1:00 p.m. - 2:30 p.m.) and sometimes 5th double period (2:50 - 4:20 pm), online
For participating in the event series you can acquire 1 to 2 CP for the General Qualification area (Allgemeine Qualifikation - AQua) or 2 CP for "teacher training". It is of course also possible to only participate in individual events of the series.
To find the entire online workshop programme of the winter semster and more information on the possibilities of acquiring Credit Points, follow the link.
You can register for single workshops or for receiving a certificate of attendence/achievement via OPAL.
In this workshop, we will take a closer look at how the AI tool ChatGPT can be used meaningfully in scientific writing. What are the strengths and weaknesses of ChatGPT, and what does it mean in scientific writing?
Some prior knowledge of ChatGPT is useful. The functionality will be briefly discussed in the workshop.
When and where:
- November 20th, 2:50 - 4:20 pm, T3 SLUB TextLab
To not miss out on future events, enroll on this interest list.
The workshop is aimed at students of electrical and mechanical engineering who are writing a thesis or major paper or are in the planning process at the time of the workshop. In principle, students of other engineering subjects can also participate in the workshop.
Contents of the workshop:
- basic quality criteria of scientific work
- Phases of a thesis, where exemplary single steps will be discussed in depth (e.g. organization of communication with the supervisor, quality criteria of sources or strategies for the preparation of the final presentation), each with corresponding methods
- Overview of writing strategies and types of writing, as well as structural prototypes of a final paper
- Text feedback: characteristics and application
When and where:
- december 8th, 9:30 am - 3 pm, T3 SLUB TextLab
In this workshop, we will first look at the topic of "types of writing" and, building on this, discuss prototypical writing phases: from topic identification to submission. This will alternate between input and practical exercises.
In this workshop you will learn to:
- narrow down a topic
- to derive a research question from it
- to compile research strategies
- try out reading and writing strategies
- Develop a sense of how the "science" actually gets into the text
When and where:
- december 8th, 9:30 am - 3:30 pm, Open Science Lab 2
You don't have time to attend a workshop on a specific date or would rather learn on your own?
Then you can take a look at our Infothek on OPAL (translation into English in progress) - and if you do want to talk about certain methods, your individual writing process or your writing project, come to a writing consultation at any time with your questions - or just to exchange ideas: more information on writing consultation and registration.
We also offer you the one-week stress management course "STRESSenziell" on OPAL (workload approx. 10-20 min per day).
