“Education shapes the future": Ceremonial event on the occasion of United Nations Day on October 24, 2025, at the New City Hall and via livestream
Under the motto “Education shapes the future" the Institute for Integrated Management of Material Fluxes and of Resources at the United Nations University Dresden (UNU-FLORES), TUD Dresden University of Technology , the Center for International Studies at TUD, the Local Agenda 21 for Dresden association, and the City of Dresden invite you to a public celebration at the New City Hall in Dresden on Friday, October 24, 2025, at 6:00 pm. This event is free of charge and will mark the United Nations Day.
Since 2012, this day has been dedicated to the United Nations' sustainability goals and their repercussions for the daily lives of Dresden's residents. This year, the debate will focus on “high-quality education.” In a panel discussion, guests from academia and practice will talk about global gender differences in the STEM subjects of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. The discussion will also cover innovative teaching and learning formats and equal educational opportunities. As part of the event, the 2025 Local Agenda Award will be presented for the 26th time. Then Local Agenda 21 for Dresden association will award the prize to recognize lighthouse projects and commitments to sustainable development in Dresden.

Program of the event
The First Mayor of the City of Dresden, Jan Donhauser, will open the event by giving a welcoming speech. This will be followed by a keynote speech by Prof. Christian Leßmann, Professor of Economics, esp. International Economics (TUD). Afterwards, Henriette Greulich (Head of the Center for Interdisciplinary Learning and Teaching, TUD), Prof. Dr. Kamila Cygan-Rehm (Chair of Quantitative Methods, esp. Econometrics, TUD), Frank Bösenberg (Managing Director of Silicon Saxony), and Prof. Dr. Edeltraud Günther (Director of UNU-FLORES) will engage in a discussion. They will present their findings from both research and practice. The social music project Musaik will provide musical accompaniment for the event.
What is the tradition behind United Nations Day (UN Day) in Dresden?
On October 24, 1945, the Charter of the United Nations came into force. Today, 80 years later, UN locations around the world are celebrating this momentous event as well as their commitment to world peace and more sustainable development. In Dresden, UNU-FLORES was established as a UN location in the World Trade Center. Since 2012, researchers from all over the world have been working on sustainable solutions to the challenges of the future.
In addition to UNU-FLORES, the organizers of the annual United Nations Day in Dresden include TUD Dresden University of Technology and its Center for International Studies, the City of Dresden, the Local Agenda 21 for Dresden association, the Society for the United Nations Regional Association of Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt & Thuringia, and the Lions Club Dresden Agenda 21.
