Aerospace Engineer: Ensuring the Safety of Astronauts
The Alumnus of the Month for September is an Aerospace Engineer.
Steve Bornhöft discovered his fascination with technology and flying at an early age. Not surprisingly, the TUD Alumnus of the Month for September studied aerospace engineering at TUD. The space enthusiast saw his first spacecraft up close three years after starting his studies. He then completed an internship at Airbus Hamburg and wrote his thesis at EADS Bremen. Today, Steve Bornhöft is an aerospace engineer at Airbus Bremen. His work helps ensure that people can travel to the Moon and survive there. As such, he plays a key role in supporting NASA's Artemis lunar mission.
On the Artemis II mission, a four-person crew orbited the Moon in February 2026. The second European Service Module (ESM), manufactured in Bremen, was also on board. This propulsion and life-support module provides and controls power, temperature, water, and oxygen, as well as the astronauts' life-support systems. “It's the survival module,” says Steve Bornhöft, who, along with his team, is responsible for assembly and testing. “We make sure that everything is assembled in the correct order, on time, and to the required quality standards. The module will be integrated into the spacecraft in the United States.”
He strongly encourages young people interested in aerospace to apply both to a relevant degree program and to his employer.
