Solidarity with Ukraine: TU Dresden coordinates numerous support programs and calls for donations for students and researchers seeking refuge
The war of aggression against Ukraine has plunged innumerable people into great hardship and triggered a wave of solidarity and a willingness to help at TU Dresden. Since the beginning of the war, students and employees have been committed to helping the affected individuals in many different ways.
The Society of Friends and Supporters of TU Dresden (GFF) has set up a relief fund for quickly and easily providing support for students and researchers in need. The donations collected are primarily intended for Ukrainian students to enable them to successfully complete their studies at TU Dresden. They will also benefit students and staff from Russia and Belarus who are experiencing financial hardship through no fault of their own as a result of the sanctions. https://tu-dresden.de/tu-dresden/profil/freunde-foerderer/gff/news/ukraine-hilfe

TU Dresden has rapidly put together special programs for students and researchers seeking refuge. The DRESDEN-concept Welcome Center at TU Dresden offers counsel and support to researchers: https://tu-dresden.de/forschung-transfer/services-fuer-forschende/welcomecenter. Student refugees can read about the opportunities for continuing their academic education at https://tu-dresden.de/tu-dresden/internationales/we-care/ukraine/studienangebote-fuer-ukrainer-innen. They can also send a request for individual counseling to . The Service Center Studies team located at the Saxon State and University Library Dresden (SLUB) is available for a personal discussion.
To ensure optimal organization of its support programs, the university set up the WE-CARE central point of contact, which is responsible for coordinating offers to help as well as requests. Furthermore, a dedicated website was created at https://tu-dresden.de/we-care/ukraine, which features comprehensive information on the topic.
More than 500 TUD members have already signed up for the mailing list for those willing to help, where inquiries and offers of support can be shared as well as requests or last-minute calls from aid organizations for volunteers, e.g. for the support of city-run emergency accommodations. Since accommodation for refugees is being coordinated by the cities and municipalities, inquiries on the matter as well as offers of assistance will be forwarded to the appropriate municipality.
In addition to the centrally coordinated aid services, there are many independently organized relief operations organized by TUD members, including donation collection, private relief transport and accommodation for a certain time frame. Researchers and students from the School of Humanities and Social Sciences have developed a learning and play workshop for Ukrainian child refugees to provide the affected families a quick and easy route to an educational and social meeting point in Dresden.
“I am deeply moved by the immense range and extent of our university’s members to provide their support and would like to extend my thanks on behalf of the entire University Executive Board for your outstanding commitment,” says TUD Chancellor Dr. Andreas Handschuh.
