Transfer accelerator for pioneering sensor technologies: SENSCUBATOR is seeking project ideas for Saxony's innovation community

In the future, technologies such as the nanobiosensor developed by HZDR scientist Dr. Larysa Barabanto to quickly detect pathogens can benefit from SENSCUBATOR's transfer support and be put into practical use much faster.
Innovations in sensor technology are the key to intelligent systems in almost all industries. TUD Dresden University of Technology, Chemnitz University of Technology (TUC), and the Helmholtz-Zentrum Dresden-Rossendorf (HZDR) have launched the SENSCUBATOR project to accelerate the market-oriented development of sensor systems and increase their transfer to industry. SENSCUBATOR is establishing a new community for sensor innovation that will strengthen the ties between science and industry.
As of now, interested researchers are encouraged to submit their ideas for sensor-related transfer projects. SENSCUBATOR supports the project teams with a structured, cooperative transfer process. The first call for ideas is open until July 13, 2025.
“The SENSCUBATOR community supports research teams in developing their sensor innovations in a targeted, market-oriented manner, bringing them to application more quickly,” explains project manager Julia Lüpfert. “We draw up a customized development plan along with each team and identify the appropriate measures. These can range from the initial transfer strategy and concrete business model development to financial support. Moreover, the growing community will be a platform for experts with different areas of expertise to exchange ideas and build networks.”
SENSCUBATOR provides support in the form of:
- Developing a transfer strategy
- Developing a business model with a focus on sustainability
- Market and IP research
- Financial support through SENSCUBATOR funds
- Support in identifying additional financing options
- Access to expert knowledge and technical infrastructure
- Networking with partners from science and industry
Joining forces for more innovation in sensor technology
SENSCUBATOR is part of the DATIpilot – Community funding program and aims to significantly accelerate technology transfer from public research to industrial application. SENSCUBATOR was selected as one of 20 communities from around 500 applications across Germany. The focus is on establishing sustainable structures and close cooperation between science and industry for an efficient, practice-oriented, and long-term innovation process in the field of sensor technology. Supported by the Federal Ministry of Research, Technology and Space, up to EUR 5 million in funding will be available to the community over a period of four years.
One focus of SENSCUBATOR is on supporting specific transfer projects. The collaboration between transfer experts and researchers enables support packages that are tailored to the individual needs of the researchers who come up with the ideas. The transfer projects also benefit from a broad network of technical and methodological experts who can be called upon in a targeted manner for the funded projects. The community initially comprises Chemnitz University of Technology, TUD Dresden University of Technology, Helmholtz-Zentrum Dresden-Rossendorf (HZDR), VEMASinnovativ, and the Dresden Technology Center, and will be expanded to include other strategic partners.
