New institute for Mechanical Science and Engineering
Greater potential for synergy thanks to merger
As of July 1, the Chairs of Magnetofluiddynamics, Measurement and Automation Technology, of Machine Tools Development and Adaptive Controlling, of Fluid-Mechatronic Systems, of Construction Machines and the Chair of Production Metrology and Quality Management have merged into the new Institute of Mechatronic Engineering – Machine Lab Dresden.
More than 100 employees in application-oriented research and teaching have joined together under one roof. “Thanks to our merger, our innovative strength in the key areas of virtual development methods, system integration and networking, test stand and control development, as well as machine and process analysis will increase and we will be able to create new, interdisciplinary courses for students,” says the first Institute Director Prof. Jürgen Weber. The new institute continues the tradition of the Machine Laboratory Dresden, which was established in the founding years of today’s campus and is closely associated with the renowned scientists Gustav Zeuner and Richard Mollier.
The establishment of the institute enables the individual chairs to make increased use of synergy potentials by bundling skills and resources alongside their previous focal points, and to collaborate across chairs in the development of mechatronic machines and production systems. The common denominator is the holistic mechatronic approach in the consideration of machines and processes.
