New surgical center opened
The center in Building 32 of the UKD (University Hospital Dresden) is a milestone for state-of-the-art medicine in Dresden

The new surgical center offers medical specialists entirely new dimensions for treating patients and training young doctors. This is made possible by the five new specialized operating theaters built into the new building. Two operating theaters have direct access to imaging with magnetic resonance tomography (MRT) for especially detailed imaging of organs. Two hybrid theaters allow radiologists and surgeons to make interventions both with a catheter and in open surgery using simultaneous imaging.
Another specialized theater is equipped with a device for irradiating the open bodies of cancer patients who have just undergone surgery. The integration of digital technologies into the operating theaters increases the quality and safety of treatments. Bright, modern patient rooms in four nursing wards with 132 beds, as well as a new intensive care ward, support patients during their healing process. On a covered terrace, ventilated patients and severely ill intensive care patients can spend time out of doors. The surgical center will come into regular operation in stages starting from autumn.
The new surgical emergency room makes it possible for a large number of patients to be quickly diagnosed and cared for. As a supramaximal care provider, the University Hospital Carl Gustav Carus Dresden offers the most advanced treatment options in all surgical disciplines – including otorhinolaryngology, pediatric surgery, oral and maxillofacial surgery, neurosurgery, orthopedics, trauma surgery with plastic surgery, visceral thoracic and vascular surgery, as well as anesthesiology.
The surgical center in Building 32 is not only designed for optimal patient care, but also takes into consideration the wishes of the staff who work, treat and care for patients there every day. The only one of its kind in Germany, there is an employee restaurant directly in the surgical area with a rest area and balcony which can be used without exiting the controlled area.
The new building also offers opportunities for the qualified training of medical professionals as well as research and teaching in close contact with patients. When it begins operations, the surgical center will bring with it numerous jobs in nursing and functional services, for physicians and in the areas of administration and IT.
