“Fascinating!” Dorothea from Belgium thoroughly enjoyed her week at the Summer University. “I found the insight into research really interesting, for example the talking computer at the Institute of Acoustics.” The 17-year-old from Brussels already knew about Dresden from her father and, like her brother a few years ago, was interested in finding out more about the university and potential degree options.
Bendegúz from Hungary was awarded a scholarship to attend the Summer University. “It’s great that I’ve been able to meet so many students from so many different countries. I’m interested in atomic physics and astronomy, which I learned more about in the physics class.” The 18-year-old from Budapest is also fond of Dresden: “This is my first time here. The city is great.”
Bendegúz found out through his German teacher that the TU Dresden International Office offers scholarships for students who are taking the Deutsches Sprachdiplom German language certificate at schools abroad. The German qualification allows students to go straight to a German university. The Association of Friends and Sponsors of TU Dresden is continuing to provide the necessary funds for 2019 and 2020, so that around ten prospective international students will have their fee and overnight accommodation covered each year.
Dorothea and Bendegúz are just two of 24 international participants from 13 different countries who took part in the Summer University. A total of 142 prospective students attended the Summer University in 2018.
In July and August at TU Dresden, they explored questions such as what the Internet of the future will look like, how stem cells can be used to cure diseases, and how a wind tunnel works. A week of lectures, lab visits, tours of the various institutes, and demonstrations gave participants an insight into education, research, and careers in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math). They also had the chance to talk to researchers and students, and got to know the city of Dresden.
The Summer University is organized by the Central Student Information and Counselling Service to help school pupils decide on their academic future and to raise awareness of the programs offered at TU Dresden. It was held for the 21st time in 2018.
In collaboration with many partners at TUD alongside research institutions and companies from Dresden, the 2019 Summer University will run from July 8 to August 2.
