Inability to take exams due to illness: new regulations from 2025
As of January 1, 2025, new regulations (SächsHSG §36 (10)) will come into force in Saxony regarding withdrawal from examinations due to illness. In future, students will no longer have to state any symptoms or diagnoses if they withdraw from an examination due to illness. This change was fought for by many initiatives, including the DGB-Jugend Sachsen and the Konferenz Sächsischer Studierendenschaften (KSS), and serves to protect sensitive health data.
A low-data medical form can be used to cancel exams, which is provided jointly by DGB-Jugend and KSS and was developed with a lawyer. Some universities offer their own forms, but these sometimes ask for unnecessary information. Students should therefore find out exactly what information is actually required.
You must deregister from the examination as soon as possible after becoming aware of the illness. To do this, it is necessary to inform the university, obtain a medical certificate and submit it to the examination office. In some cases, e.g. for state examinations, additional requirements may be imposed, e.g. an official medical examination. If you have any questions or problems, please contact the student representatives. It is important to observe the deadlines, which can be found in the respective examination regulations or on the websites of the examination offices.
